It was therapy and it paid great. Classic Albums Live (CAL): This is a tough album for us to perform. The vocals are tricky. There’s nuance and layering and thunder and the guitars are orchestral. Plus\, the vibe of the album — the feel – that’s hard to recreate. I wanted the band to move into an apartment together to prepare for this album\, but that didn’t fly. So\, we rehearsed our asses off and we got it. What’s cool about this record is that everyone knows all the words — even the ushers at the shows. So\, when CAL hits the stage and plays this masterpiece\, it is joyous. We love you when we’re playing.

Beyond her glamour\, Lamarr was a brilliant inventor who\, using knowledge from her marriage to an Austrian arms dealer\, co-invented The Secret Communication System with George Antheil during WWII to improve torpedo accuracy. This Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum Technology now powers cell phones\, WiFi\, GPS\, and Bluetooth. \nWritten and performed by Heather Massie\, who portrays 36 characters\, the play blends art and science\, reflecting Massie’s astrophysics and theater background. Premiering Off-Broadway in 2016\, it has toured globally\, earning 31 awards and inspiring audiences\, especially young women\, to pursue science and technology. The play honors Lamarr as a role model for intelligence and innovation.

Where rock anthems sit comfortably alongside the great tunes from the glens and the mountains of Scotland. \nIt’s The Red Hot Chilli PIPERS — (NOT the Peppers!) — a 9-piece ensemble consisting of pipers\, guitarists\, keyboards\, and drummers — who have been rocking the world from New York to Beijing to Melbourne and everywhere in between with musicianship of the highest order and a passion for pipes that will leave you breathless. The band has four music degrees from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and all the pipers and drummers have played at the top level in bagpiping. \nSince they walked away with the top prize on the primetime TV talent show\, “When Will I Be Famous” in the U.K. in 2007\, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers haven’t stopped for a breath\, other than to inflate their bagpipes! Jones/Arnie Zane Company is widely varied in its subject matter\, visual imagery and stylistic approach to movement\, voice and stagecraft and includes musically-driven works as well as works using a variety of texts. The company has performed worldwide in over 200 cities in 40 countries on every major continent and is recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the dance-theater world. \nThe company excels in community outreach and education\, collaborating with U.S. university dance programs to reconstruct notable works for students. It offers intensive workshops for dancers and hosts discussion events to engage with ideas. The company will perform two classic pieces: “Continuous Replay\,” originally choreographed by Zane in 1977 as “Hand Dance” and revised by Jones in 1991\, featuring Kansas State University Dance Program students\, and “D-Man in the Waters\,” a vibrant Bill T. Jones work from 1989\, closing the evening.

DESCRIPTION:The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain\, that’s the one founded by George Hinchliffe and Kitty Lux\, has already enjoyed touring in the United States many times. For those who have not yet encountered it\, the essential point is that it is an original musical ensemble featuring only ukuleles of various sizes and registers\, accompanied by just the natural voices of the performers. \nHarsher critics have stated the opinion that the Ukulele Orchestra formed their repertoire based on any music considered inappropriate for the instrument\, with a “shopping trolley dash through genres” and musical history. In Europe and America the Orchestra is best known for playing versions of famous rock songs and film themes\, sometimes changing these so that the expectations of the audience are subverted. Sometimes a rock song will be changed into a jazz idiom\, or sometimes several songs which are known from different genres are combined in one “soup of contrasts.” \nThe founding brief for the group was to have fun and “not to lose money.” Incredibly\, throughout its thirty year career\, the group has succeeded in both not losing money AND incidentally making millions of dollars. It has been seen worldwide by audiences including members of the British Royal Family and other crowned heads of Europe\, at the Houses of Parliament in London\, and by many millions of television and online viewers.
